Jeannie Baker herself states that she wishes to “communicate to people through different layers of meaning in my work, the most obvious of which young children can understand and the more subtle, older readers” (Jeannie Baker, n.d.). Jeannie baker also uses composition and focal point in her work composition in the way she organises her collages (centre of interest and framing) and focal point in the way the eye is drawn into her collages (especially in her book, "Window").īaker’s books are published as children books, for children however can intrigue the interested older readers mind and curiosity. Most of the vegetation in her illustrations is real, and she uses preservation techniques when dealing with live materials. These include: “bark, feathers, cracked paint, earth, knitted wool, tin so that their natural textures become an integral part of the work” (Jeannie Baker, n.d.). Jeannie Baker uses a range of materials both natural and synthetic in her collages she likes to use real materials to portray the scenery. She uses her illustrations to communicate her messages through layers some of the messages or issues she has conveyed include: environment, family, society, sustainability, Australian outback, wildlife, and cultural differences and similarities. To completely illustrate one of her books, it can take Jeannie up to 3 years (Walker Books Australia, 2007). She defines her style as “Collage Constructions”, with the use of salvaged materials in her artwork. To illustrate her books Jeannie uses collage, which she has dabbled with collage since in 1972. Jeannie Baker is an author and illustrator of children’s picture books, and an exhibitionist. She attended Croydon College of Art between 1967 and 69, and later graduated in 1979 from Brighton College of Art, with honours (Net Industries, 2012). Born in Croydon, England 1950, Jeannie moved to Sydney, Australia in 1975 where she lives and works today.
